Early silicic magmatism on a differentiated asteroid

چکیده
Unlike the other terrestrial planets, Earth has a substantial silica-rich continental crust with bulk andesitic composition. A small number of meteorites compositions have been identified that are thought to be products partial melting chondritic protoliths, mode petrogenesis distinct from Earth’s crust. Here we show, using geochemical analyses, unlike known meteorites, Erg Chech 002 strongly fractionated and low abundances highly siderophile elements mineralogy consistent origin melt. The meteorite’s composition, which is similar andesites, cannot explained by basaltic lithologies instead requires metal-free source. We argue probably formed ~15–25% mantle an alkali-undepleted differentiated asteroid. Our findings suggest extensive silicate differentiation after metal–silicate equilibration parent bodies was already occurring within first 2.25 million years Solar System history formation does not necessarily require plate tectonics. Geochemical analyses meteorite continental-crust-like composition due core on body.

What caused the Early Silurian change from mafic to silicic (S-type) magmatism in the eastern Lachlan Fold Belt?
One of the characteristic features of Ordovician tectonism in the east Lachlan Fold Belt is the occurrence of calcalkaline to shoshonitic basalts, which have been recognised as part of an intraoceanic arc environment (Glen et al. 1998), consistent with early tectonic interpretations (Oversby 1971; Scheibner 1973). Aside from typical traceelement abundances of intraoceanic arcs, critical evidenc...
متن کاملThe Seismic Effect of Impacts on Asteroid Surface Morphology: Early
Introduction: In recent years, spacecraft observations of asteroids 951 Gaspra, 243 Ida, 253 Mathilde, and 433 Eros have shown the overriding dominance of impact processes with regard to the structure and appearance of these small, irregular bodies. One currently unanswered question is: to what degree does seismic shaking from impacts affect the surface morphology of these bodies [1]? Through d...
متن کاملAnatomy of a Partially Differentiated Asteroid: A “NEAR”-Sighted Viewof Acapulcoites and Lodranites
With the insertion of the NEAR spacecraft into orbit around the asteroid 433 Eros, a new stage of asteroid exploration has begun, with the return of spatially resolved mineralogical, geological, and chemical information from specific asteroids. In this paper, we outline the features of a partially differentiated asteroid using the acapulcoite and lodranite meteorites as a guide. Such a body wou...
متن کاملHighly silicic compositions on the Moon.
Using data from the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment, we show that four regions of the Moon previously described as "red spots" exhibit mid-infrared spectra best explained by quartz, silica-rich glass, or alkali feldspar. These lithologies are consistent with evolved rocks similar to lunar granites in the Apollo samples. The spectral character of these spots is distinct from surrounding mare...
متن کاملNominally hydrous magmatism on the Moon.
For the past 40 years, the Moon has been described as nearly devoid of indigenous water; however, evidence for water both on the lunar surface and within the lunar interior have recently emerged, calling into question this long-standing lunar dogma. In the present study, hydroxyl (as well as fluoride and chloride) was analyzed by secondary ion mass spectrometry in apatite [Ca(5)(PO(4))(3)(F,Cl,...
